Surf Travel
The popularity of surf shirts today suggests one thing: surfing, an activity that was once scoffed at by parents and conservatives, is now a sought-after hobby, sport and profession. Oh, let us do away with moderate adjectives – “sought-after” simply does not suffice. There is a growing force all over the world that reveres the surfing sport and lifestyle. This group of people – composed of ordinary blokes, college students, middle-aged corporate characters, early retired couples, kids and, of course, beach bums – are finding that they simply cannot resist the call of the waves. Beneath the drone and drive of specialised studies, business trips and metropolitan buzz, they feel the tug to step off the shore and paddle against the current and ride above or under the foaming waves.
Those that have answered to the coaxing of the ocean have found that they cannot get enough of surfing. This is why, at one point oranother, each surfer finds himself or herself going on a surf travel. This may take him to other side of the coast or even to places like Brazil, South Africa, Costa Rica, Tahiti, Hawaii and Indonesia just to find bigger and more challenging waves. The constant rendezvous with the sea may seem like an affair only for the romantic few, but it is more than that. The constant exercise required by the effort of paddling against the current and balancing atop the board effectively increase stamina and burn fat. This is why surfing professionals become worshipped as fitness icons. After all, who would not drool over perfectly formed abs, toned muscles, strong backs, firm legs and perfect tans?

Beyond body image, though, lies a deeper satisfaction and benefit that can be gained from the sport of surfing. Getting “stoked” is the term that surfers use to describe the feeling of exhilaration and joy when they ride upon a wave. Aptly taken from the image of a fire being stirred up and fed, the surfer’s high produces energy and passion, rushing in a string of positive feelings. As the body skims along the surface, pent-up negative emotions like stress and depression are released. A sense of fulfilment from being able to get upon huge waves also helps to improve someone’s self-esteem. Due to the physical, emotional and social benefits of surfing – as well as the sheer fun and thrill of the experience – many surfers decide to take their dedication to it a notch higher. They end up investing in beachfront homes, determined to keep the lifestyle with them not only on holidays but even well into their retirement, when they can look back on an exciting, challenging life on the waves.
