Learning the Surfing Culture
Individuals who practice different styles of surfing basically share a way of life that is totally distinct from the others. First of all, one can easily identify a true-blooded surfer with his choice of clothing and motor vehicles. Usually, surfers are found driving woodie cars and are spotted wearing boardshorts and baggies.
Aside from their fashion statement, one of the most distinguishable gestures seen as part of the unique surfing culture is the Shaka sign, which is a traditional Hawaiian greeting where the thumb and the smallest finger are extended, with the three other fingers curled up in the centre of the palm. In surfing culture, the Shaka sign symbolises friendship and goodwill shared by diverse persons (of different beliefs and races) who are captivated by the beauty and excitement brought by the sport of surfing.
